Yesong Sophie Lee, age 11, attends Cedarwood Elementary School. She started studying violin with Jan Coleman at age 4, and is currently studying with Simon James and piano collaborator Hiro David in the Coleman Violin Studio. In addition to the 2015 Seattle Symphony Young Artists Auditions, Sophie has won numerous competitions, including First Place in the 2015 MTNA National Junior Strings Performance Competition, and the 2015 Seattle Young Artists Music Festival Concerto Competition, where she was one of two entrants to be awarded the Festival Medal. Sophie was the youngest finalist in the 2014 Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition. She was recently a featured soloist with the Cascade Symphony Orchestra as the winner of their Rising Star Competition. Sophie was a soloist with the Seattle Symphony at age 8, having made her orchestral debut at the age of seven as a winner of the Snohomish County Music Teachers Association Concerto Competition. She was selected to perform in the Kaleidoscope Concert of Suzuki Association of the America’s 15th Biennial Conference in Minnesota Orchestra Hall in 2012, as well as in the honors recitals of the Japan-Seattle Suzuki Institute for 4 years. Sophie was awarded First Place in the Simon-Fiset String Competition of the Seattle Music Teachers Association for the past 5 years. An enthusiastic orchestral and chamber musician, she has been concertmaster of the Seattle Youth Symphony’sJunior, Debut, and Symphonette Orchestras, and has participated in Mini-Mania String Quartet Camp for two years. This past summer, Sophie attended the Brian Lewis Young Artist Program. Sophie has played in master classes for Brian Lewis, Jan Sloman, Grigory Kalinovsky, Paul Kantor, Vadim Gluzman, Arabella Steinbacher, Mimi Zwieg, and Cornelia Heard, among others. Her other interests include reading, drawing, riding her bike, and playing with her brother Ben.
