Meet the Beat

DESIGNED FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Seattle Symphony is one of the premier recording orchestras in the United States. These unique programs are designed in collaboration with educators to ensure curriculum support for arts, communications, humanities and other curriculum areas. Come experience what it takes to be on top of the music world. Designed for grades 6 through 12 (Arts EALRs 1.1, 1.3, 2.3, 3.2, 3.3, 4.2, 4.4), these concerts can be partnered with an in-class Great Composers visit. Concerts begin at 10:30am in the S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium in Benaroya Hall.

Seattle Symphony UBS Masterworks Season Concerts for Clock Hours
Attend a UBS Masterworks Season concert with a pre-concert lecture one hour before the performance for 3 clock hours through Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA). Overview of concerts of particular interest to educators. Experience an Open Rehearsal and meet Seattle Symphony musicians.

1–4pm
Process of Music Making (3 clock hours through WMEA)
Composition workshop for music and non-music classrooms with Samuel Jones, Seattle Symphony Composer in Residenc. Includes informative discussions on the social and historical contexts of great composers.

Seattle Symphony in Your Classroom is also available for 1 quarter credit or 10 clock hours through Seattle Pacific University with additional assignments and a concert attendance requirement.

From Soccer to the Symphony

This concert explores musical athletics, elegance and team work. Featuring excerpts from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Copland’s Appalachian Spring. Eighth-grade violinist Marié Rossano will perform Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Cappriccioso, Op. 28.

Nominate your favorite symphonic piece to be considered for programming! Submit your vote with a paragraph explaining why the piece should be the #1 choice. Email your nomination and paragraph to education@seattlesymphony.org with “Listener’s Choice” in the subject line. Nominations will be accepted until 5pm on November 2, 2007. Teachers are encouraged to submit multiple student nominations in a single email.
