Schuman's Symphony No. 8
Seattle Symphony and Naxos, the world’s leading independent classical music label, have released the fifth and final installment in a series of William Schuman’s complete published symphonies. The release features Music Director Gerard Schwarz conducting Seattle Symphony in three important works by the American composer including Symphony No. 8, Night Journey: Choreographic Poem for Fifteen Instruments, and Schuman’s arrangement of Charles Ives’ Variations on “America.” The disc includes liner notes provided by Joseph W. Polisi, Schuman biographer, and president of The Juilliard School.
William Schuman was a distinguished 20th-century composer as well as president of The Juilliard School and later, Lincoln Center. According to Polisi, “Schuman’s extraordinary life as a composer and arts leader reflects his role as an artistic catalyst within the fertile and evolving environment of 20th-century America.”
