Debussy String Quartet

Chamber Series >

In Debussy's first and only foray into writing for string quartets, he broke the chamber music mold. With his daring and freeform structure, he created a strikingly modern chamber style all his own. Strauss Till Eulenspiegel

Masterworks Series >

Hold on to your hay cart — the fabled trickster Till Eulenspiegel is back at his merry pranks! Richard Strauss takes us on a wild ride with music’s most lovable troublemaker. The effervescent Oboe Concerto revisits Strauss 50 years later, after he befriended an American soldier and oboe virtuoso in Germany at the end of World War II. Seattle Symphony Principal Oboe Mary Lynch comes front and center for a fresh reading of this alluring showpiece. In Jeux, Debussy fleshes out a kinetic tableau of tennis and other flirtatious games. The radiant Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin shines the spotlight on Wagner and his explosive, futuristic approach to the orchestra that impacted both Strauss and Debussy so profoundly.

Ludovic Morlot Conducts Debussy

Masterworks Series >

It’s Ludovic Morlot’s final appearance as Music Director, and he is throwing a party for the ages. In Debussy’s gorgeous Nocturnes, clouds drift off, festivals flash and fade away, and the shimmering sea beckons with the seductive call of the Sirens. For Janáček, the king of Czech opera, composing the choral work The Eternal Gospel offered an outlet for timeless themes of love and peace that transcend any language or faith. Bon voyage, Ludo, and thanks for the inspiration you have brought to us all.
