The effervescent orchestral music displays the confidence Haydn earned after composing more than a hundred symphonies and the jubilant vocal solos draw on his oft-forgotten talents as an opera composer.

This critically acclaimed [untitled] series explores new and contemporary works — all in the informal atmosphere of the Samuel & Althea Stroum. Thomas Dausgaard shares the music of his fellow countryman, Danish composer Bent Sørensen, whose shimmering works have been compared with the paintings of Georges Seurat. Sørensen is the 2018 winner of the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition.

Our festival kicks off with the voices of youth. Inspired by Beethoven’s first symphonic compositions which were born out of a period of dramatic change and revolution, teens from across King County have come together to compose a new work reflecting on our changing climate and its impact on their future. Paired with Beethoven’s First and Third Symphonies, we’ll hear how this master advanced the Classical style of his mentors Haydn and Mozart, turning the pages of history and launching the Romantic era in all its power and grandeur.
