Finland 100: Celebrating 100 Years of Finnish Independence

Finland turns 100 this year, and we celebrate with an exciting program of old and new. Sibelius’ famous Finlandia and Karelia Suite convey the vast landscape and spirited people of the country. Continuing Sibelius’ tone poem traditions, Rautavaara’s Lintukoto (Isle of Bliss) further explores the northern mysticism with ever more expansive harmonies. Saariaho, currently Finland’s most prominent composer, set to music four poems of Eino Leino, one of Finland’s most important poets. Leino Songs portray love, pride, night, and peace. The program continues with a lively Finnish polka and a lush wedding waltz, concluding with Sibelius’ patriotic cantata Oma maa (My Native Land).

Philharmonia Northwest, under the direction of Julia Tai, will be joined by soprano Maria Männistö, as well as members of local Nordic and Baltic choirs. This concert is proudly presented by Finlandia Foundation.
