These extraordinary guitar-poets from the southern Sahara desert blend blues, rock and pop with Berber and Arabic influences to create an altogether hypnotic concert experience. A bass chord and a chorus of male voices open the dance, followed by youyous, cries and handclaps. The powerful melodies of Tinariwen have become the soundtrack for a whole generation of exiled Touareg youth living in Algeria and Libya. Their latest album, Elwan (2017), continues this theme. While Tinariwen were criss-crossing the globe on their recent triumphant tours, the frontiers that encircle their desert home were closing and forcing them into exile to record this album.
