Following an unforgettable performance at Music Beyond Borders, Kinan Azmeh returns to perform the world premiere of his clarinet concerto with the Seattle Symphony. He is joined by the musicians of the Silkroad Ensemble in a concert celebrating the exchange of musical traditions, from Vijay Iyer’s ruminative City of Sand to Edward Perez’s thrilling Latina 6/8 Suite to a world premiere by Chen Yi.

French conductor Ludovic Morlot has been Music Director of the Seattle Symphony since 2011. Among the many highlights of his tenure, the orchestra have won three Grammy Awards and gave an exhilarating performance at Carnegie Hall in 2014, as reported in The New York Times: “The performance Mr. Morlot coaxed from his players was rich with shimmering colors and tremulous energy.”
Hailed as a “virtuoso” and “intensely soulful” by the New York Times, “spellbinding” by the New Yorker and “incredibly rich sound” by the CBC, Kinan Azmeh's utterly distinctive sound across different musical genres has gained him international recognition as clarinetist and composer.
Yo-Yo Ma conceived Silkroad in 1998 as a reminder that even as rapid globalization resulted in division, it brought extraordinary possibilities for working together. Seeking to understand this dynamic, he began to learn about the historical Silk Road, recognizing in it a model for productive cultural collaboration, for the exchange of ideas and tradition alongside commerce and innovation. And in a radical experiment, he brought together musicians from the lands of the Silk Road to co-create a new artistic idiom, a musical language founded in difference, a metaphor for the benefits of a more connected world.
The Seattle Symphony is one of America’s leading symphony orchestras and is internationally acclaimed for its innovative programming and extensive recording history.
