Byron Schenkman & Friends: Bach & Musical Offerings

Our season opener takes us to the courts of Louis XIV and Frederick the Great, patrons of the arts who inspired some of the best European music of the 18th century. From the French court we present music composed by François Couperin for Louis XIV’s private concerts, and an extraordinary sonata by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre - one of very few musicians granted permission to dedicate their work to the king. From the Prussian court we offer J. S. Bach’s famous gift to Frederick the Great, his “Musical Offering” Sonata, based on a theme presented to Bach by the monarch himself.
