On January 31 the Seattle Symphony presented the eighth annual Celebrate Asia, honoring Seattle’s Asian-American community. This year’s concert, conducted by Jindong Cai, featured two world premieres, including Bai Chuan Fu Hai by Shao Zheng, the winner of this year’s Celebrate Asia Composition Competition, generously underwritten by Yoshi and Naomi Minegishi. Following intermission, audience members were encouraged to participate in Tan Dun’s Passacaglia: Secret of Wind and Birds by playing bird sounds through the Symphony’s Listen Boldly mobile app.
Pre- and post-concert activities in the Samuel & Althea Stroum Grand Lobby, including traditional dance and choir performances, Taiko drumming and Bollywood dancing, added to the festive atmosphere of this family-favorite event.
Special thanks to the Celebrate Asia Committee for their leadership and Presenting Sponsor JPMorgan Chase & Co. for their generous support. Thanks also to Supporting Sponsors Acucela, Bellevue Children’s Academy, Delta Air Lines, The Nakajima Family, NAREIG and the Atsuhiko & Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Foundation; and the many individual sponsors, community partners and attendees who helped make this year’s event a success. Celebrate Asia is presented as part of the Seattle Symphony’s New Music WORKS initiative, which is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
